Welcome to The Change Underground Earth Worms Page!

Worms are the one animal that is essential to The Change Underground System. These beasties provide the oomph to all the gardens. All waste is processed by the earthworms. These produce a high voltage fertilizer/soil conditioner that underpins the fertility of the whole enterprise. For this reason the other stock exist in the system to feed the worms. We could simply feed them excess vegetation but by putting this material through an animal first we concentrate the nutrients. This allows the worms to feed on "pre-digested" matter, considerably speeding up the system.

Worms also provide feed for chickens and other poultry. They represent the protein fraction of the poultry diet.

Selection of the correct worms is critical.

The most commonly farmed worms around the world are:

bulletTigers (Eisenia foetida)
bulletReds (Lumbricus rubellus)
bulletBlues (Perionyx excavatus)
bulletAfrican Night Crawlers (Eudrilus eugeniae)

These worms produce rapidly, under the right condition, developing populations up to 440,000 /m2. This is quite remarkable and extremely useful. The worms represent a much better form of protein for poultry than and grain. They are the "natural" protein with which poultry evolved. This releases much grain for human and other animals feed.
